When you have fine lines, sagging skin, or hair loss due to aging, it can take a toll on your self-esteem. Although you can’t turn back time, it’s possible to reverse the signs of aging for certain periods of time. Microneedling provides one way to do this. At MINTS Medical in Lincoln Square, Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad offers microneedling for patients in Chicago, Illinois, who are interested in looking younger.

Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a procedure that uses your body’s natural healing ability to reduce the signs of aging, such as fine lines.

This is a nonsurgical method of facial rejuvenation and hair growth that involves damaging targeted cells or follicles in order to stimulate healing. Dr. Ahmad uses microneedling for minimizing fine lines, making skin more firm, and promoting hair growth.

How does it work?

Microneedling causes low-grade trauma to the skin and sub cutaneous tissue thereby increasing blood flow to the area, stimulating collagen growth and release of growth factors. The healing process regenerates healthier younger looking skin, reduces scarring, helps in reducing skin wrinkles, and promotes hair growth by virtue of increased blood flow.

Microneedling doesn’t cause any damage to other cells outside the targeted area.

Why should I consider microneedling?

If you have hair loss or signs of aging that affect your skin, such as sagging skin, microneedling can provide you with a healthier appearance.

Dr. Ahmad offers this procedure for those who are experiencing hair loss or a loss of skin elasticity that causes fine lines and sagging. He can also use it to reduce acne scarring and the size of pores.

Is microneedling safe?

Microneedling is safe for many patients. Dr. Ahmad evaluates you to let you know whether or not this type of procedure is suitable for your skin or hair needs.

Keep in mind that microneedling isn’t safe for everyone, though, such as patients who have diabetes or compromised immune systems. Dr. Ahmad considers these factors when deciding if you’re a good candidate for it.

What does microneedling feel like?

Although microneedling involves damaging skin cells, you won’t be in any pain during your treatment.

You might feel slight discomfort depending on how sensitive you are, but you can request numbing cream if it bothers you. You might also have skin redness after your treatment, which is common during the healing process.

How many treatments do I need?

You might need multiple microneedling treatments depending on certain factors, such as how severe the signs of aging are. Each treatment session usually lasts about an hour. Dr. Ahmad lets you know if you need to come back for more and roughly how many treatments you’ll need.
