Thread Lift Q & A

WHAT ARE THREADS?

Threads are made of the same material as usual surgical sutures in most cases. There are some threads made of gold and other materials. These threads are made by multiple vendors and are variously called Silhouette Soft, PDO, and Aptos. Thread lift is a minimally invasive alternative to regular surgical lift. There are no anesthesia or incisions. Downtime is minimal, (usually less than a few days) and results are very comparable. Thread lift is most commonly performed for face and neck, but other areas that need lifting like breasts, buttocks, belly, upper arms and thighs are also regularly treated.

HOW DO THREADS WORK?

In general, these threads have small barbs or hooks which catch on to the tissue. When the threads are pulled they pull the skin with them. Threads are absorbed after a year or so. These threads produce inflammatory reaction leading to collagen formation which helps skin lifting in long term.

HOW LONG DOES THE EFFECT LAST?

The collagen formation as a result of thread placement is permanent. However, with age you will lose collagen and the changes will reverse.

Another way to look at it is that the threads will set your age clock back by a few years. You then start aging naturally from that point.

AM I TOO YOUNG TO HAVE THREAD LIFT?

Although people asking for surgical face lift are generally older, thread face lift is typically performed on clients in their early 40s and 50s.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY THREAD LIFT TREATMENT?

  1. Please avoid any medication or over the counter supplements that may increase your tendency to bleed for a week before the treatment.
  2. If you have had Herpes in the treatment area, please let us know before your appointment so we can prescribe anti-viral treatment.
  3. Have a light breakfast. We will not sedate you, but you can take an anxietolytic to relax during the procedure. If you want, please ask us to prescribe one for you prior to your appointment.
  4. Wear clean clothes. The shirt may get soiled so please wear that you are not very fond of.

WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER TREATMENT?

  1. Do not drive or operate heavy equipment for the remainder of the day. You should bring a responsible adult driver with you to take you back home.
  2. Do not drink alcohol for 48 hours.
  3. Do not Floss your teeth for 2 weeks. It puts excessive stress on your sutures so this should be avoided.
  4. Do not apply hydrogen peroxide or plastic Band-Aids to any of the drainage slits or holes (incision sites)
  5. Do not soak your suture areas in a bath, Jacuzzi, swimming pool, or body of water for 14 days following surgery.
  6. Do not engage in vigorous physical activity for 2 weeks.
  7. Stay on a soft diet for the first 3 days after surgery. Drink plenty of water, fruit juices.
  8. Keep your head elevated at least 30 degrees for the first three nights.
  9. Avoid any direct pressure to the face and area where the sutures were placed for Three (3) weeks after surgery has been performed. (Example: sleeping on your face - known as the face-down position)
  10. Limit facial movements to a minimum for at least 2 weeks. Avoid excessive chewing, talking, yawning, smiling, and other facial movements during this period.
